Gardenias —by Jinny Batterson

Not the showiest blooms—
Not huge, not colorful,
Just small, off-white circles
Of petals that last for
A few days, then brown
And fade.

Not the earliest,
Not the latest–
Braving neither the cold
Nor summer’s blistering,
Just brightening our late spring
With buds that pop
In sudden profusion.

Not a single stalk,
Not a statuesque shrub–
Just a middling evergreen
That needs a bit of
Shelter in winter.

Not the darlings of garden shops,
Not the plants nurserymen tout–
But, ah, their scents!
