Turtle –by Jinny Batterson
(Inspired by a greenway encounter with a basking turtle as I was bicycling one spring morning.)
A strange noise seems to be
Coming from beyond a big shiny round thing
At the top edge of my vision.
“Good morning, turtle,” the noise says,
Whatever that means.
I raise my head and look toward the noise briefly.
It seems to be a cheerful noise,
But not nearly as important
As exploring this cool patch
Of moss-covered dappled earth
As I conduct my Sunday morning
